As our business name suggests, we are very interested in living long and/or fulfilled life! Because of this, we have been drawn to knowledge, ideas and studies that give insight into living a long and fulfilled life. If you have ever made the same search, it is guaranteed that you eventually would be lead to the “Harvard Study”. This study began with 268 Harvard sophomores in 1938. In the 70’s they added 456 inner city residents to add diversity to the information. On a regular basis they would interview and examine each study candidate. They would gather information such as cholesterol levels, weight, and current medication, as well as happiness levels, and feelings of fulfillment. Currently there are less than 20 of the original candidates still alive and less that 40 of the group added in the 70’s. As the study progressed, the descendants of the groups were included into the study. Dr Robert Waldinger is the studies current director, and in 2016 gave a fascinating TED Talk. The link is below.
One of the greatest observations of the study is the power of relationships. They found that the genetic and physical findings did play a part in longevity and happiness, but the greatest predictor of a happy long life was the quality of relationships. Those included partner, family and community relationships. As we move forward in our objective to help all who we can influence to live long and fulfilled lives through physical, mental, social and spiritual health. Let’s keep in mind the power of these relationships. More information to come!
